Missing the microwave

May 25, 2023 | Coaching

By Matthew Deevers, PhD

Our over-the-range microwave died recently. Living without the microwave for a few days has proven more challenging than I expected.

Want to warm some leftovers for a quick lunch between meetings? Too bad. Heating up soy milk for a matcha latte? No can do. What time is it?!? I don’t know because the clock on the microwave is BLANK!

Living without a microwave for a short while is a first world problem. I acknowledge my privilege. But every challenge, no matter how trivial, also offers opportunities for learning.

Lessons I am remembering without a microwave

Be grateful. Take time to appreciate everything the people in your life do for you. Aside from quickly heating up my food, that microwave was my go-to for checking the time in the kitchen. It’s the little things…

Be mindful. Did I fill a bowl with leftovers and shove it toward the empty space where the microwave used to be? No comment. Am I remembering to be more mindful in my daily actions and to question my habits? You bet.

Be patient. I used to need 75 seconds to heat up my soy milk for a latte in the morning. Right now, it is taking me about 3 or 4 minutes on the stove. I need to get over myself.

Be flexible. Hey there, toaster oven. We see you.

If you are trying to live without the metaphorical microwave in your own life, you may benefit from coaching. Reach out. Let’s talk.
